District 13 is an expansive district that stretches from US-36 in Boulder to the Continental Divide. With that, the district has two distinct areas. Parts of Boulder are included, including the newly developed North Boulder area, the Hill, Chautauqua, and the Shanahan Ridge sections. There are also two national labs, NIST and NCAR with facilities located in Boulder. The rest of the district is the mountain towns, ranging from wildly liberal to slightly Republican. Central City and Blackhawk in Gilpin County and Georgetown and Idaho Springs in Clear Creek County make up the major towns in the mountainous part of the district. Gilpin County was one of the major gold mining sites in Colorado, and when the mining dried up, legalized casino gambling has revitalized the area.
