District 1 is most of the northern Eastern Plains counties, from Sterling and Fort Morgan on Interstate 76 to Lamar and Prowers County. Most senators in this district come from representatives who were elected in House District 63. The district is dominated by ranching and farming, with larger cities following the South Platte River and I-76 in the northern section and the Arkansas in the southern part. In the center, towns dot along I-70. <BR> These towns did not originate with the highways, but rather the railroad and settler trails from the 1800s. Fort Morgan, the county seat of Morgan County, was set up as a stop on the Overland Trail, a branch of the Oregon Trail that led to the Denver area. The fort eventually became a town, and two railroads, Union Pacific, and Missouri and Burlington Pacific railroads would eventually create stops at Fort Morgan. The other intersection of two railroads would eventually become Sterling, CO, the seat of Logan County. The third county, Elbert County, has been growing mostly due to suburban sprawl from Castle Rock and Parker. Other railroad lines also follow where cities were founded and can be tracked from highways that were built parallel to them, such as I-70 with the Chicago Rock Island line, and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway to connect Pueblo and coal mining to the Eastern States and later became US 385.
