District 3 contains the entire city of Pueblo and western parts of Pueblo County. Pueblo was first established in 1842 as a fort, which was later destroyed by a group of Ute Indians. In the 1860s, the town was reestablished, partly due to the Gold Rush which brought more settlers into the state. Pueblo grew as it became the crossroads for a large amount of railroads coming from the east with grain, west with metal ore, and transport to the north and south. Pueblo was one of the largest steel producers in the United States, which is a primary reason the U.S. Army Ordinance Depot is located near Pueblo. However, when the steel market crashed, the area's fortunes declined. The town has diversified since then, and the high cost of materials as of this writing has brought better fortunes to the city. Pueblo also has the distinction of the most Medal of Honor recipients in a single town, which is a even more astounding fact considering half of the recipients were awarded due to Civil War combat, when the town did not exist as it does now.
